Police are investigating a shooting in New Baltimore where a man took two bullets to the chest after breaking through the locked door of a home Sunday night.
According to city Police Chief John Bolgar, a 36-year-old Fair Haven man busted through the front door of a home in the 3700 block of Main Street at about 10:30 p.m. After being called to the scene, officers found the wounded man where he collapsed down the block from the shooting scene. They administered first aid before he was transported to Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center. He is in critical, but stable, condition. The homeowner, 44, fired a nine mm gun twice at the intruder, shooting him in the torso and chest. The homeowner’s gun was legally registered.
A woman, said to be the assailant’s ex-girlfriend, was in the home at the time of the incident. The homeowner is her ex-husband, according to police. Detectives are investigating the crime to ascertain the motive of the man, and have not ruled out domestic violence. Bolgar said a domestic offense can “become violently criminal in the blink of an eye.”
During a press briefing Monday afternoon, Bolgar pointed out that the U.S. Supreme Court has recently changed its ruling to allow homeowners more rights in defending their domain, if threatened.
