EMU dicusses Martin as 22nd president
After months of applicant vetting Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents said they would hold a special meeting Wednesday to consider the appointment of Dr. Susan Martin as EMU's first female president in its 159-year history.
Thomas Sidlik, chair of the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents said the board discussed the issue Saturday and decided to offer the position to Susan Martin.
Martin is currently provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs for the University of Michigan – Dearborn. But she said she would be more than willing to leave her position to come to EMU.
“I think EMU needs strong and stable leadership and I think that I bring that,” Martin said Friday during a community forum at EMU’s Student Center.
The past week wrapped up the final stages of candidate vetting with community forums for the four final candidates.
Michael Flanagan, superintendent of public instruction for the state of Michigan; Kenneth Burnley, senior resident fellow and director of the Education Leadership Center of the School of Education at the University of Michigan; Don Shelton, 22nd Circuit Court judge for Washtenaw County Trial Court as well as Martin were the final four candidates.
However, Sidlik said Martin was the right candidate for the position. “Dr. Martin has all of the qualities needed, such as scholarly achievement and practical experience, to help lead EMU forward,” he said.

The Board of Regents has scheduled the special meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in 201 Welch Hall.
The meeting is open to the public.
