Councilwoman, city clerk among challengers for commission
The race for a seat on the Wayne County Commission heated up at the filing deadline Tuesday.

The incumbent for the 5th District seat, Ilona Varga (D-Lincoln Park), is facing opposition from four candidates: Lincoln Park Councilwoman Valerie Brady, Lincoln Park City Clerk Donna Breeding, Joseph Callahan of Lincoln Park and Dorothy Hernandez of Detroit. At one time, Callahan worked as the district aide to Varga and is now seeking the position himself.

As all five candidates are registered as Democrats, the winner will be virtually declared at the Aug. 5 primary election.

The position pays $68,676 annually and encompasses Lincoln Park and part of southwest Detroit.
