The Oakland Literacy Council seeks additional volunteer tutors to support its mission of providing free literacy instruction for adults in Oakland County. Since 1984, using hundreds of volunteer tutors, the nonprofit has assisted some 10,000 students who are working to improve their reading and writing skills or are learning English as a second language. Students enroll in our program to help them pursue a variety of goals, such as earning a GED, obtaining employment, helping children with homework, recreational reading, and others.
New tutors must complete a three-part training session (preregistration required). The next session is Saturday, Jan. 26 (10am-4pm), and the evenings of Monday Jan. 28 and Tuesday Jan. 29 (6pm-8:30pm) at the West Bloomfield Township Public Library. For information call the Council at 248-253-1617 or e-mail info@oaklandliteracy.net.
The Council also welcomes referrals of adult students who seek tutoring.
